When someone nearby searches for “what you sell near me,” Google doesn’t lead with your website: it shows a map with three businesses and their reviews. If you’re not in there, you don’t exist for that customer — even if you have the best product on the block. One thing controls that map block: your Google Business Profile (formerly “Google My Business”). Here’s how to show up, move up, and turn those searches into customers who walk through your door.
Why your profile decides who walks in
Most local searches end in a fast action: a call, a set of directions, or a same-day visit. Those decisions get made in the map block, not in the results underneath it. A profile that’s properly built gives you three things your website alone can’t: a spot on that map, reviews that earn trust instantly, and “Call” and “Directions” buttons one tap away. It is, quite literally, your storefront at the exact moment someone is deciding who to buy from.
How to move up in “near me”
Google picks which three businesses to show based on relevance, distance and prominence. You don’t control distance, but you do control the other two. These are the levers that actually move the needle:
- The right category. Pick the primary category that describes exactly what you sell, not a generic one. It carries more weight than almost anything else on the profile.
- Identical details everywhere. Name, address and phone should match letter for letter across your profile, your website and any directory you’re listed in. Inconsistencies confuse Google.
- Reviews, steadily. Volume, rating and — critically — whether you respond. A regular flow of real reviews is one of the strongest signals there is.
- Real, recent photos. The place, the team, the product. Profiles with photos get far more direction requests and calls than profiles without them.
- Activity. Posting an update, an offer or a photo every so often tells Google the business is alive and being run by somebody.

The most common mistake: claim it, then abandon it
Almost every business has a half-filled profile, created years ago and never touched since. That’s worse than not having one: Google sees a dead listing and buries it. A profile that performs is a profile that gets tended — new photos, answered reviews, hours kept current with holidays included, a post now and then. It isn’t much work, but it has to be constant, and constancy is where most businesses fall down.
Reviews: your best salesperson, if you work them
Reviews do two jobs at once: they move you up the map and they convince the person who’s hesitating. Ask for them, without embarrassment, right after a good experience. Answer every one — the good ones with thanks, the bad ones calmly and with a fix, because whoever reads that exchange is watching how you handle a problem. One bad review answered well sells more than ten good ones. What you must never do is buy fake reviews: Google catches them and penalizes the entire profile.
Connect it to the rest of your presence
The profile doesn’t work alone. When it links to a site that loads fast and behaves on a phone, the customer who found you on the map finishes making up their mind once they land there. And if you can take payment or bookings online on top of that, a “near me” search turns into a sale without you ever picking up the phone. The profile captures; your website and your systems close.
Messages and questions: don’t leave them hanging
Google lets customers message you straight from the profile and post public questions. An unanswered message is a sale going cold and, worse, it sits there in plain view of everyone else. Turn messaging on only if you’re going to handle it, and answer the common questions yourself before a stranger does — yes, anyone can answer them. Every interaction you handle is one more signal that the business is active.
What to watch to know it’s working
The profile shows you how many times you appeared in searches, how many calls it produced, how many direction requests and how many clicks to your site. Don’t obsess over the numbers daily, but review them every month: if calls and directions are climbing, you’re on track; if they’re flat, you’re short on category, reviews or activity. That turns the profile from a passive storefront into a tool you improve with data.
The short version
Showing up on Google’s map isn’t luck: it’s the right category, consistent details, steady reviews, real photos and activity. Most of your competition has an abandoned listing — that’s your opening. A well-run profile brings you calls, directions and visits every day, at no media cost, at the exact moment the customer decides.
